The Era of Solopreneurship is coming

The way we look at jobs and employment is going to fundamentally change in the years ahead on account of the rise and rise of artificial intelligence or AI. With more and more job roles and functions typical of large organisations employing large numbers of people being taken over by AI, there will be fewer and fewer jobs and occupations that we have known in the traditional sense available to people of employable age.

They will perforce have to turn to solopreneurship in order to keep themselves gainfully employed. In this AI dominated and driven future, people will need to learn to develop skills that are in sync with AI and can, thereby, effectively leverage the technology and obtain optimal benefits from it. The idea would be to make an ally of AI and not a rival.

What will be the skills in demand in this new age era of solopreneurship?

1.       Superior Cognitive Skills

While AI can process humongous amounts of data and discern patters, it does not possess the ability to take a nuanced and out of the box view of intractable and highly complex problems and situations. This is where a human brain can step up to the plate and help make strategic decisions even when there is incomplete or inadequate information available. The ability to be both creative and innovative can help humans think about ever new possibilities and scenarios leading to the development of whole new original concepts.

Solopreneurs with the ability to come up with a clear and farsighted vision for their business ventures and adapt their strategies to an environment that has been shaped by rapid and incremental advancements in AI will thrive.

2.       Interpersonal and Emotional Skills

AI for all its abilities and capabilities will never be able to foster genuine connections with clients, vendors. suppliers and others thereby hampering the building of trust and the likelihood of meaningful collaborations. Active listening, empathy and the ability to engage in persuasive communication will give solopreneurs a leg up in terms of building long term relationships and managing complex collaborations.

Humans, unlike AI possess EQ which will give them the edge over the latter when it comes to things like rapport building and conflict resolution.

3.       Leadership

Even though solopreneurship will likely be the norm in the not so distant future, individuals will need to be self-motivated and to that extent will need to learn to lead themselves effectively in order to perform effectively. At the same time, they will need to learn to be excellent at motivating and inspiring the people they need to deal with. These range from collaborators and clients to their AI powered virtual assistants!

4.       AI Skills

Don’t walk into the rain without an umbrella! That does not mean that everybody has to become an AI nerd. One does, however, need to understand how one can leverage AI for better business opportunities and growth. It would, also make eminent sense to become proficient at using AI tools that can help automate processes, carry out data analysis, and help with marketing as well as customer service.

Look out for the future-it is solopreneurship in era of AI

Most jobs and professions that we see around us like those of teachers, lawyers, engineers, coders, writers, architects, accountants and even doctors are going to see a gradual and incremental takeover by AI. This may be good for society or bad- we don’t know yet. But the movement in that direction is inevitable and inexorable.

In a scenario like that solopreneurship is likely to take the place of the jobs that form the bulk of the middle class white collar employment that a large number of us aspire to. We need to make our young people prepare themselves for the future that is coming.

Solopreneurship in a time of economic uncertainty and flux

These are fraught times with geopolitical tensions and the upending of a well-established global economic order by the sole superpower of the world promising to usher nations across the world into a pall of uncertainty. Add to that the seemingly inexorable march of AI threatening jobs across segments and sectors. Everyone is afraid of what the future holds for them in the next five to ten years. Above all, they are afraid if they will have jobs at all, the way things seem posed to move.

Is solopreneurship the answer to people’s job and employment anxieties? It is an autonomous occupation that is completely under one’s own control. It allows everyone to leverage their own skills to create an income stream that is unaffected by corporate downsizing or a change in the economic orientation of industries.

It can help impart stability and put one in charge of one’s affairs, which is not possible in the case of traditional employment, especially in the times that we live in. That is because a solopreneur can be agile and nimble with business decisions-something that large, established corporations struggle with. This is what will help people who adopt solopreneurship stay afloat despite the uncertainty and head winds that seem to be the norm in today’s times.

What’s more, the very AI which threatens traditional livelihood can become a tool or platform to be leveraged to automate tasks, put in place efficient processes, improve productivity, increase sales and fuel growth and expansion. The important thing here is to find one’s own niche or niches and build one’s business around them.

Solopreneurship allows one to have multiple income streams, so that in the event of one income stream petering out, there are others that can keep one afloat. Besides, a solopreneur can expand into international markets taking advantage of digital global connectivity. This can help them hedge their risks with regard to any slowdown in business.

Solopreneurship is, of course, not risk free, but what line of work ever is? It requires good business ideas, strategic planning and deft decision making, but is very doable in the age of AI and global connectivity. Above all, it is one’s insurance against economic redundancy in fraught times, if done right.

Solopreneur to Millionaire- Is it possible?

Becoming a solopreneur is the flavour of the times with more and more corporate employees opting out of the 9 to 5 and beyond rat race and striking out on their own. But how successful can they really be as solopreneurs? Can they become millionaires working on their own without any corporate or big brand backing? After all aren’t many of the superstar sportspeople, actors, and authors solopreneurs in a sense? What about the untold riches so many solopreneur You Tubers seem to be making?

The internet has levelled the playing field for all manners of businesses and scaling up massively from next to nothing is no longer a pipe dream, but something that enterprising individuals achieve quite frequently in the online universe.

So is it possible for anyone to become a solopreneur millionaire in today’s times?

In a planet of more than 7 billion people, is it not eminently practical for someone to come up with a sufficiently brilliant solopreneur business idea that addresses some specific need or needs of enough people to help one make a million bucks a year?

Think about it. It doesn’t seem that far-fetched anymore. This is actually a bit like finding life outside the safe confines of planet Earth in a universe teeming with billions of galaxies teeming with billions of solar systems teeming with billions of planets like ours. Is it possible that one would not find life somewhere out there, if one looked hard enough? But the fact is despite all the deep space research and all the probes sent out there, no evidence of life has turned up.

There are however a very large number of real life examples of solopreneurs who have easily made it to millionaire status.  So the chances of your solopreneurship making a millionaire out of you are not at all dismal if you have a great actionable business idea.

It is not enough to have a great business idea that brilliantly addresses a specific need or needs-you need to be sure that it has a market as well. This would mean that there are a sufficiently large number of people out there willing to pay a fair price for what you are offering them.

If your product or service idea is outstanding and you are sure that it has a sizable market as well, you won’t be able to cut it, unless you are able to market and sell effectively.

Once you have all the above under control, you will need to learn financial management to be able to keep your expenses in check, as well as get the pricing right enabling you to hit the sweet spot with your fund-flows-the life blood of a business.

For any business to grow and scale it is important for the entrepreneur in question to learn from market feedback and make the necessary adjustments and improvements to one’s products or services. This is even truer for a solopreneur where the margin for error is very little

Lastly and very importantly no solopreneur can be an island unto themselves and hope to succeed. Networking and networking is indeed the pathway to success for a solopreneur. It opens the doorway to collaborations and ever new opportunities leading to exponential growth.

Do you have it in you to become a solopreneur millionaire? Won’t you like to find out?

How can a solopreneur scale up?

The biggest fallacy about solopreneurs is that they cannot scale up. They can and very successfully too. But, first they have to take care of a few things. Let’s see what these are:

1.       Being a solopreneur does not mean going it alone

No man is an island unto himself and that is certainly true of solo entrepreneurs. They cannot be like Atlas shouldering the entire burden of their business on their shoulders. It is neither practical nor sensible to do so and can lead to inordinate stress and burnout. You have got to connect with others of your ilk and find ways to exchange views and collaborate.

Connecting with others online or physically is important to obtain the information necessary to grow and develop in your chosen field of expertise. The more you interact with others-clients, suppliers, vendors, mentors, peers and industry leaders, the more opportunities you would be able to avail of to scale up your business.

2.       You have got to learn all you can

If you are serious about scaling up your business you have got to be serious about learning all you can. You have got to make time for reading the right books, listening to the right podcasts and getting a firm handle on formulating the strategy and tactics that are optimal for scaling up your business. Knowledge is definitely power if you are serious about scaling up your solopreneurship against all odds.

3.       Outsource

It would be a good idea to outsource certain tasks to professionals who are good at them. There are many things like content creation, posting on social media and website maintenance which can be taken care of by professionals while you focus on your core business functions of creating products and servicing your customers. Doing so will help you be more efficient and grow your business.

4.       Automate and Get Organised

Rapid strides in technology have enabled even solopreneurs to deploy CRMs to get the best out of their data, helping them optimise your sales and marketing processes. Importantly, you could also look at automating your emailing, giving your business a leg-up in the process.

5.       Build your Brand

A solopreneur needs to build his or her brand in a manner that its core values are clear to the intended target audience. It goes without saying that you should both know and epitomise those values so that your target audience know of your ability to serve their needs and interests.

Solopreneurship is mainstream and how

Solopreneurship is the flavour of the times, thanks to the technology revolution sweeping the world.  Ostensibly, run solely by one person who is the owner and manages everything from operations to publicity and sales, it can pretty much operate at scale much like a regular company, partnership or sole proprietorship employing many people to carry out diverse functions. Ever new developments in technology have made it possible for such businesses to run cheaply and efficiently allowing them to grow and prosper.

Why become a solopreneur?

There are compelling reasons to become a solopreneur in today’s day and age and that is something that hasn’t been lost on people. In fact, solopreneurs accounted for 84% of American businesses as far back as 2020, a figure which is bound to be higher in 2024.[1] In India 22% of the unicorns that came up in the last decade started as solopreneur endeavours.[2]

Let us look at the reasons driving the surge in the number of people choosing to become solopreneurs-

Potentially limitless earning potential

If you find a lucrative niche to operate in, there is potentially limitless potential to earn, depending upon how ambitious you are and how hard you are willing to achieve those ambitions. There is no petty office politics or grave corporate intrigue to hamper your progress and you don’t have to anxiously await your performance appraisal for a less than satisfactory raise.

Looking beyond corporate life

A successful corporate life may long have been considered the pinnacle of achievement, but that is no longer the case, especially in the post-Covid scenario. People have come to realise that there is much more to life than spending every waking minute relentlessly pursuing someone else’s business goals and paying a very heavy price in terms of one’s personal well-being.

Add to that the ever-present spectre of loss of employment and the charm of the 9 to 5 routine begins to wear off quickly. People crave a work-life balance more than ever before and solopreneurship offers them just that.

The growing use of technology

The growing use of technology, especially AI has enabled solopreneurs to scale up and enhance efficiency and productivity to the enterprise level, allowing them to grow in an exponential manner. This levelling of the playing field has convinced large numbers of enterprising and ambitious people to go along the solopreneur path, often with spectacular results.

Industries Amenable to Solopreneurship

There is a whole host of industries that see a fair amount of solopreneurship activity. These include-

-Content Creation

-Digital Marketing

-E-Commerce

-Wellness

-Legal Services

-Coaching

-Consulting

-Technology (including software development)

-Creative Art

-Designing

-Real Estate

-Finance

-Accounting

-Personal Services

-Education

-Engineering Services

-Travel

-Hospitality

Do it now!

If you always felt the urge to strike out on your own and break free of the shackles of corporate slavery, but dithered and hesitated for one reason or the other, there isn’t a better time than now to take that leap of faith and carve out your own destiny. There is more chance of your finding success than there ever was in the history of mankind. Follow in the footsteps of millions of others who made it as solopreneurs, forever earning their living on their own terms.
